PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

"Jeremiah the Innocent" makes his way onto the heather black t-shirts of Austinites Katie Ziemann and Chad Wright. This 50% cotton, 50% polyester American Apparel tee features the original art of legendary musician Daniel Johnston. This tee is screen printed by hand in the Storyville Print Shop with bright green ink.

Daniel Johnston's twenty foot tall "Jeremiah the Innocent" mural can be seen on the side of the sushi restaurant at 20th & Guadalupe Streets in Austin, Texas. Daniel painted in 1993, on the side of what was then the Sound Exchange record shop. Daniel was a regular customer at the hip (and now defunct) record shop. Daniel dubbed the creature "Jeremiah the Innocent" as a nod to the Three Dog Night song "Joy to the World."

So what's the big deal about this "Hi How Are You" alien frog? Well, part of the story is the Jeremiah's creator -- Daniel Johnston. If you haven't already seen the documentary "The Devil & Daniel Johnston", make sure to add the award winning movie to your Netflix queue. Daniel Johnston is a marvelously intriguing character.

But the other part of Jeremiah's story involves the mural's near-death experience. In 2005, Baja Fresh took over the building that serves as a canvas to the mural, and they planned to paint over Jeremiah. Due to public outcry, the City of Austin responded by designating the mural a public work of art and therefore untouchable. Baja Fresh went out of business in 2007.

This t-shirt is available in the unisex cut as well as the female-specific cut (go here for sizing charts). Photos by Megan Colwart.
